Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, was painted using short dabs of unmixed pigments, a method developed by Georges Seurat in 1886. The Pointillist technique used small dots of pure color that merged in the viewer's eye to create brilliantly luminous tones. Although it represented a significant divergence from traditional Impressionist technique, it was nonetheless a style closely related to the movement.
